Natalia, I like the ideas you're having about encouraging the personal exploration and creation of art rather than just the dissemination of it. I think that both of those need to happen - and more. I think that art and literature as communal activities - whether it's reproduction (singing other people's songs together), creation, or just communal experiencing (going to concerts, say) - could be a really effective (and fun!) way of building community and raising consciousness and prompting action and facilitating new thought. Encouraging that kind of communal art in our communities and helping communities with fewer resources begin that kind of work could maybe be a really excellent kind of activism.

This kind of communal learning of the arts is especially important in schools with children, but imagine if it spread to whole mixed and adult communities! It's a lot harder to discriminate against someone when you're working together with her to write a song, or when you're both down on your knees painting a ginormous canvas. I mean, it's by no means a cure-all, but it sure seems like a good idea to me.

Sorry, Sasha, if I'm derailing this thread some! I still haven't thought through the incredibly challenging question you posed in the first post.
